Fish Processing: Packing & Shipping Options for your Salmon Catch |
| |
After your day on the water...
After your day of fishing, your guide will fillet, pack and freeze your catch for you. Fish are either packed in complimentary commercial grade 6mil clear poly bags or vaccum-packed in specialized freezer bags (Cost: $2.00/fish for vacuum-packing)
Fish Shipping Options
One of the most frequently asked questions from our guests is "what do we do with the salmon we keep during our fishing trip?"
You basically have two options:
1) Pack your fish in a cooler or insulated fish box and transport as checked baggage on your commercial flight home or 2) Utilize the services of Alaska Sausage & Seafood in Anchorage to process your fish, smoke a portion of it if desired, pack your fish and ship your fish for you.
Coolers, Boxes and Flying Your Fish Home
This is the most affordable way to transport your catch. You may either bring your own cooler or purchase coolers or fish boxes in Anchorage at any grocery store, Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer or sporting goods store. Coolers and fish boxes can be stored at Rust's Flying Service in our secure, locked storage shed so you won't need to bother lugging them with your on the float plane flight to our lodge. We will bag your frozen fillets for transport on your return flight to Anchorage and you then can transfer fillets to your coolers and/or fish boxes when your return to Rust's.
We do have a limited amount of styrofoam insulated fish boxes available for purchase at the lodge for $20 each.
Packing your fillets in insulated coolers or boxes should guarantee your fish will remain frozen for 24 - 36 hours. Most hotels in Anchorage have freezer storage space available for guests if you plan to stay a night or more in Anchorage following your stay at Wilderness Place Lodge. Our storage shed at Rust's Flying Service has a large chest freezer you may also store your fish in. Rust's is open daily from 7 am to 9 pm so be sure to pick up your fish during open hours.
