Name your adventure. The activities below are available from Wilderness Place Lodge during various times in July. Plan your dates of travel to incorporate a variety of fishing experiences and other adventures.Combine activities to customize your ideal experience. Fishing Peaks, Adventure trip availability, etc. are outlined below. July is a very dynamic month on Lake Creek and offers many different fishing and adventure opportunities!

Adventure #1 - Early July Kings, Rainbows (Available July 1-13)

King fishing remains effective through the first week of July each year. While the season is open to fishing through July 13th, the best fishing tapers off by the end of the first week of July as the kings begin to enter their spawning phase. Rainbow fishing is quite good during this time under lower clear-water conditions. Rainbows, which are always available in our river system tend to be more densely assembled as the month of July progresses. We target the bows primarily with fly tackle drifting egg-imitator patterns and egg-sucking leeches amidst and behind salmon schools. Smolt-imitator patterns, sculpin patterns and an assortment of dry flies are also popular methods of targeting rainbows during this period on Lake Creek.

Adventure #2 - Week-long Wilderness Fishing Float Trips (available June 27 - July 25)

We offer fully guided float-fishing trips for groups of 2-4 down the length of Lake Creek for $2895 all-inclusive. The trip begins at the river headwaters at Lake Chelatna covering 60 river miles in 6 days. Rainbow fishing is unparalleled in the upper reaches of Lake Creek, and Arctic Grayling are found in abundance as well. Floaters can fish for king salmon up until July 13th when the season on kings officially closes. We fully outfit the trips and the guides are well-versed in fishing tactics, whitewater safety, outdoor skills, camp prep, wilderness knowledge and customer service. We supply you with all necessary camp gear and fishing equipment. The trip covers a wide array of terrain from mountain habitats, a picturesque canyon, small tributaries off the main river, muskeg marshes and virgin forests. A float trip on Lake Creek is an ideal experience for the adventurous group in seek of excellent fishing, campsite comeraderie, photography opportunities and a first-hand account of the remote Alaskan wilderness. The sixth night your group will spend at the lodge with a gourmet dinner, hot shower and private cabin(s).

Adventure #3 - Rainbow Trout Day Ventures (available July 1 - August 1)

This is an ideal option for the avid fly fisherman, or those in seek of acquiring fly fishing skills and a new experience. We access the lower river by jet boat and often will park the boat and hike upstream to untouched waters. Guides can pack a lunch for you, or prepare a shorelunch on the water while you fish. The low waters of Lake Creek in early and mid-July allow easy wading and hiking down gravel bars, islands and riverbanks. Rainbow trout fishing is productive under these conditions and average fish size runs from 14-24 inches in the month of July.

Adventure #4 - Evening Bearviewing trips (available July 1 - August 1)

Our area is home to a healthy population of both brown and black bears, most of which are very nocturnal. Although it is rare to see a bear on our waterway by day, they will appear during the evening on the banks of the river upstream. You may wish to plan an evening venture upstream in seek of photo ops. Our guides typically will drive you upstream by boat each evening to areas that we often see bears in July. The trip can be 2-4 hours and we view bears by sitting riverside, or oaring boats down the river at dusk. This option is a great way to view other wildlife as well, while the river is quiet and uninhabited by boats or fishermen.

Adventure #5 - Sockeye Salmon fishing (Peak: July 15-25)

Sockeye salmon run into Lake Creek in abundance during mid-July. Although the run timing is variable, sockeyes are usually densely populated in Lake Creek on or within a few days of July 17th. Sockeyes run on the shallow, inside channels, are easy to spot in large numbers and are taken on both fly and spin tackle. Sockeyes are bright silver upon their arrival and represent the best table-quality salmon meat. Sockeyes move fast upriver and support us with 7 days of very good fishing. From there on, they move further upstream enroute to small tributaries of Lake Creek as well as Chelatna Lake at the headwater of our river.

Adventure #6 - Silver, Chum and Pink Salmon Fishing (Peak: July 16 into August)

During the 2nd week of July our Pink, Chum and Silver salmon arrive in the lower river. Fish densities increase daily and provide for fast action and large numbers of fish. Best fishing is in the lower river during mid to late July and the fish proceed to cover much of the river system by August 1. All fish are fresh from the ocean during July and can be taken on a variety of fly fishing and spin fishing presentations.
