Alaska Rainbow Trout Fishing, Lake Creek

Rainbow Trout are native to Lake Creek and represent a superior fishery throughout the 60 mile river system. Alaska rainbow trout are voracious feeders and migrate to find various food sources throughout the summer. Trout can be caught in good numbers all summer long. Our largest trout of the summer come during the salmon spawn from late July through August. Fly fisherman rave at this abundant and magnificent species. Rainbows are the featured fish of the less beaten waters we explore by raft from Lake Chelatna down to the lodge. Dozens of rainbows may be caught daily during the late season salmon spawn, ranging 14 up to 30 inches in length.

Equipment Needed for Fly Fishing Alaska Rainbow Trout

We usually fish rainbow trout in fast-water riffles and runs behind spawning kings, pinks and chum salmon although many of our biggest fish hang in the deeper runs all summer long. Dead-drift and/or nymphing presentations thoroughly covering these areas work best. Strike indicators are often helpful, but not a necessity. Targeting larger rainbows is often done with big, size 4 - 1/0 black articulated leeches, Ginger woolhead sculpins, or black hareball leeches. These flies are swung through deepwater slots with sinking tip fly lines.

Rods: We use 5-7 weight fly rod/reel outfits for trout

Flies Used in Fly Fishing Alaska Rainbow Trout

Fly line/Leader: Typically use a floating double taper or weight forward 5-7 weight fly lines. A 5-6 ft. straight 4-6 lb. mono or tapered leader is desired. Split shot may be added to leader to attain the desired drift. A lightweight sink tip may be used for fishing articulated leeches or sculpin patterns into deepwater holes during mid-summer.
Rainbow Trout Flies: Early Season- Silver/blue streamers size 6-8, sculpin patterns, Assorted dry flies- Orange Stimulator, Adams, mosquito patterns, caddis.
Late Season- Orange/pink glo bugs, "Cotton Candy" flesh flies, White Bunny hare flesh flies, Assorted Beads, Battle Creek streamers
