Fishing Lake Creek Alaska

Alaska Silver Salmon Fishing, Lake Creek

Silver "Coho" Salmon appear in abundance in Lake Creek during mid-July. The run remains strong until the end of August. An extreme sport fish, many silvers are taken on the fly as well as variable spin-fishing techniques. Silver fishing is a game of pursuit and tactful casting to pockets and pools of schooling fish. Silvers are very popular with fly fishing guests, both expert and novice alike. Being able to sight-cast in clear, backwater sloughs and pocket water make fly fishing topwater or subsurface flies a favorite. Silvers average 8 - 12 pounds in Lake Creek. In addition, we frequently fish neighboring tributaries of the Yentna River within a to 1 hour boat ride from the lodge. Day trips upriver with shore lunch are a client favorite.

Equipment Needed for Fly-Fishing Silvers

Silver Salmon primarily congregate in eddies, sloughs and backwater channels off the main current of Lake Creek. Silvers congregate in these areas in large numbers and provide an exceptional quarry for the fly fishermen. We fish a variety of salmon streamers, primarily with floating fly lines and 4-5 foot leaders. Higher water conditions, deeper channels and current may require a light to intermediate sink tip line. Most silvers are caught by a cast/strip/retrieve method 1-3 feet under the water, or in some conditions on topwater fly patterns.

Rods: We typically use 7-8 weight fly rod/reel outfits for silvers on Lake Creek

Flies Used in Fly Fishing

Fly line / leader: Typically use a floating or 10' or 13' T-2 Type III sink tip lines depending on fishing location.
Flies: Pink, Green & Purple, Lake Creek Egg-sucking leech, with pink head, flashabou tail. Flash Flies in various silver flash color combinations, Blue Moon marabou flies, Pink Marabou flies of various styles are also an excellent choice in high or dark water conditions.
