The following is a list of recommended clothing, personal articles and outdoor gear for your Alaska fishing trip to Lake Creek. It is a sample list and represents typical items that the average fisherman might bring along and what the local residents and guides might use. We generally have a good selection of the most commonly needed articles in our tackle shop. Because of our remote location, we recommend that our visitors arrive with an adequate supply of film, medicines and toilet articles.

Wilderness Place Lodge, Alaska - Trip Planning and Packing Info

Plan for the Weather: Dressing in several layers is important as the weather changes from cool to warm and sunny, you can be comfortable with minimal inconvenience. Our weather can vary from chilly and wet (dipping down to 40 or 45 degrees at night) to warm dry days above 80 degrees, requiring sunscreen. For the most part, our area has excellent weather, but come prepared for all possible conditions. And remember that at our latitude of about 62 degrees, we have over 20 hours of daylight in June and July! You can check the local weather before coming at www.weather.com and viewing zip code 99667.

Travel Light! When traveling by float plane, baggage space is limited so avoid hard suitcases and bring only duffel bags or soft luggage for your trip to the lodge. Nearly all your clothing and gear for a week-long stay should fit inside one 15 inch by 30 inch duffel bag and one smaller bag. Also, please leave your hair dryer at home as the generator is not able to support high wattage items.

Clothing and Personal Gear to Plan on Packing:

Polarized sunglasses
Light-weight rain shell
Fleece or wool pullover/jacket
Sandals or Tennis shoes
Medicines, if required, in original bottles
Personal toilet articles
Good selection of socks
Light-weight long underwear
Light gloves
Thin wool stocking cap
Baseball cap or river hat
Short-sleeved cotton shirts
Mosquito repellent
Sun Screen
Camera
Flashlight (necessary in late summer)
If you have any special things you need to bring, such as a sleep apnea/breathing machine, please be in touch so we can assist you. We are able to accommodate the use of these machines 24/7 at the lodge if we know in advance.

Fishing Equipment & Tackle: We have a good selection of quality rods and reels for both fly & spin fishing which are available and inclusive of the trip package price. If you intend to use our equipment, please fill out the online guest questionnaire (listed at the bottom of this letter) in advance to ensure you have reserved any needed equipment. Also included as part of your trip price is the use of our breathable waders and wading boots.

Our tackle shop is fully stocked with all the popular lures and terminal tackle that spin fishermen will need at Lake Creek. We have a good selection of lodge-tied flies in all the popular patterns which are included. Also, available to our fly fishermen, there is a fully-stocked fly-tying table in the lodge if you happen to find that perfect pattern of the week.

Whether coming as a Spin or Fly Fisherman, we will assist you in providing the right gear for fishing during your stay. Either way, remember all tackle and fishing gear is already included in your trip price.

And while we do have everything you need to hit the water already at the lodge, we also understand that sometimes it is more comfortable to simply use the equipment you know best. If you feel that you would like to bring and use any of your own personal rods, waders/boots, or other tackle or flies you are free to do so. We would simply encourage you to check the website link below, or give us a call, to learn more about the suggested rod/reel combos and fly/lure recommendations for each fishing species. Our Fishing Page.

In-Lodge Expenses: We do have Alaska sport fishing licenses for sale at the lodge for the convenience of our guests. The 2010 cost for non-residents is $55 for a 14-day license, $35 for 7-day or $20 for a 3-day license. All anglers 16 years or older must have a license. You can also purchase the required king salmon tag ($10 tag for 1 day, $20 tag for 3 days, $30 for 7 day or $50 tag for 14 days) at the lodge.

Beer and Wine are available for sale at the lodge. We have a good selection of California wines, domestic beers, as well as Alaskan Amber on tap. Alcoholic beverages, other than beer and wine, are not for sale at the lodge. Guests should bring their own liquors if they wish. We can supply mixers and ice to guest cabins upon request.

In the event you plan to leave a gratuity, groups typically bring along a pre-determined amount of money which they allocate among the guide and staff. In any season we see gratuities which range from 5-10% of the lodge trip price. Groups typically divide the gratuity into a 50/50 up to a 75/25 split among their guide and then remaining in-camp staff. Any gratuities you wish to leave for your guide, the chefs, or wait staff are solely at your own discretion and should be based on the quality of the experience you had.

Catching and Bringing Fish Home: When you catch a fish at the lodge, your guide will fillet and freeze the fish for you. Upon leaving the lodge, you have two options to take your fish home.

First is to bring up your own 44qt. cooler as an additional piece of luggage and leave this cooler at our storage facility at Rusts Flying Service. This will allow you to pack your frozen fillets upon your return from the lodge and check the cooler as your second piece of luggage if you have a direct flight heading home. In almost all domestic flights this works quite well.

Second option would be to have the fish processed and shipped home. While at the lodge, you would fill out an order card and we would ensure that the fish are picked up by Alaska Sausage & Seafood Inc. in Anchorage. They can pack and ship fresh fillets, or smoke and package a mixed percent of your fillets upon request. They will then ship the fresh/smoked fish to your home/office when you return from your vacation. Additional Alaska Sausage & Seafood information is available at their website: www.alaskasausage.com or for current pricing and options please call them directly at 1-800-798-3636.

If you have additional travel plans after your stay with us, unfortunately we do not have the ability to store your fish at the lodge or in Anchorage while you continue your trip due to limited packing and freezing space for guests.

Finally, we are allocated a 35 lb limit per person on the float planes from the lodge to Anchorage. And while we can generally freeze and fly back the daily limit for each angler during their trip, in the event there are guests who exceed this float plane weight limit, due to an extended stay, there may be additional costs to fly your fish home. This occurs when we need to charter a separate plane in advance of, or during, your scheduled departure to ensure that all of your fish is available to take home that day.

Estimates for Taking Fish Home: As a planning tool, salmon typically yield 50-60% of their body weight in fillets. For example, if you catch your limit of ten 7 lb silvers over five days you will be fine to bring home your fillets from the lodge and in checking into the airlines with the cooler you have brought up. Although, if you catch five 30+lb kings, which yield 60% fillets by weight, you will have 100lbs of fillets per person! We do encourage catch and release when possible, and ask that you think about how much salmon for a year is right for you. 35lbs of fillets creates a meal for two weekly nearly all year.

Current Alaska laws for Lake Creek allow 1-King Salmon to be taken daily and a season limit of five. With either Sockeye or Silver salmon, up to 2 each are allowed to be kept and no more than 3-salmon total daily combined. Pink and Chum Salmon fillets are typically not kept since it is a softer meat. All Rainbows and Arctic Grayling are catch and release.

In all cases the lodge policy requires strict adherence to current Alaska state sport fishing regulations, and we ask that our guests support us in maintaining this practice. If there are any updated or special regulations which increase or decrease catch limits at Lake Creek they will be posted at the lodge during your stay.

Before You Leave Home, and Most Importantly: Please be sure to fill out the online guest questionnaire so we can accommodate any fishing, dietary, medical or other special requests you may have.

Please go to site and fill out this questionnaire for each member of the group: Guest Questionnaire

We wish you a pleasant trip to Alaska! We are sure that your stay with us at Wilderness Place Lodge will be a memorable one. We recommend that you plan to overnight in Anchorage the night before traveling to the lodge in order to avoid any inconvenience caused by airline or baggage delays traveling from your home. Details of your float plan flight schedule to Lake Creek are attached, or will be provided 30 days in advance of your arrival date.

Please don’t hesitate to phone/email us if you require any further information or assistance in planning your trip.

We will see you soon in Alaska!
