Anchorage sits at the convergence of two worlds — a modern, cosmopolitan city of nearly 300,000 people pressed up against one of the most spectacular wild landscapes on earth. To the east, the Chugach Mountains rise sharply from the city’s edge. To the west, Cook Inlet stretches toward volcanic peaks across the water. Overhead on any given day, floatplanes arc out over Lake Hood — the world’s busiest seaplane base — carrying anglers and adventurers into the backcountry beyond.
That’s the thing about Anchorage: it doesn’t feel like a gateway so much as a destination in its own right. World-class restaurants, Indigenous cultural centers, world-record salmon runs in urban waterways, and moose wandering neighborhood green belts — it’s a city that takes some getting used to, and one that most visitors wish they’d spent more time in.

Anchorage enjoys long, mild summers that consistently surprise first-time visitors expecting something far more extreme. From June through August, average daytime temperatures range from the mid-50s to the low 70s Fahrenheit, with occasional warm stretches pushing into the upper 70s. What defines the season as much as temperature is daylight — at the summer solstice in late June, Anchorage receives nearly 19.5 hours of sunlight, with a prolonged twilight that never fully darkens. Rainfall is moderate and tends to arrive in short, passing showers rather than prolonged storms, and the surrounding mountains frequently clear between weather systems to reveal stunning alpine panoramas. For visitors arriving from warmer climates, layers are the standard approach — mornings can be crisp even in July, and conditions in the backcountry where we fly guests tend to run cooler than in the city. Pack a light rain shell, a mid-layer fleece, and a few warm base layers, and you’ll be well prepared for whatever the Alaska summer brings.
Anchorage Museum — One of the finest regional museums in the American West, with rotating exhibitions on Alaska history, science, art, and Indigenous cultures. Located in the heart of downtown’s shopping and dining district — easy to pair with a meal.
Alaska Native Heritage Center — A remarkable living cultural center north of downtown dedicated to the eleven distinct cultural groups of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples. The interactive exhibits, traditional demonstrations, and performance spaces make this one of the most meaningful experiences available in the city.
Alaska Aviation Museum — Situated directly on the Lake Hood Seaplane Base, adjacent to Rust’s Flying Service, this museum traces the singular role that aviation has played in Alaska’s development and daily life. Kincaid Park — Anchorage’s largest municipal park offers an extensive trail network through coastal bluff forests. Moose sightings are common in the early morning and evening hours — a genuine wildlife experience within city limits.
Tony Knowles Coastal Trail — A paved multi-use trail running 11 miles along the coast from downtown to Kincaid Park. Rent a bike downtown and ride the whole thing. Tidal flats, mountain views, and frequent wildlife sightings make this one of the best urban trail experiences in North America.
Flat Top Mountain Trail — For those wanting a more strenuous hike, Flat Top delivers panoramic views of the entire Anchorage Bowl, Cook Inlet, and the Alaska and Aleutian ranges on clear days.
