Pack Light and Travel Smart for Your Alaska Fly-In Trip

Because your trip to our remote Alaska fishing lodge includes float plane transportation from Anchorage, soft-sided duffel bags are strongly recommended. Please avoid hard suitcases whenever possible, as they are difficult to load into float planes and wilderness aircraft.

For most guests, all clothing and personal gear for a week-long stay comfortably fits into:

  • One medium-to-large duffel bag (approximately 30” x 40”)
  • One smaller carry-on style bag or backpack

Traveling light makes your Alaska float plane experience easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Alaska Weather and Layering Tips

Weather in Southcentral Alaska and the Western Susitna Valley can vary significantly throughout the day. Temperatures may range from cool mornings in the 40s to warm sunny afternoons exceeding 80°F during peak summer months.

The best approach for comfort is dressing in layers. Lightweight, breathable clothing combined with warm insulating layers allows you to quickly adjust to changing river, weather, and float plane conditions.

During June and July, our northern latitude near 62 degrees provides more than 20 hours of daylight, creating long days perfect for fishing, wildlife viewing, photography, and adventure activities.

Even though our region often experiences beautiful summer weather, it is important to prepare for occasional rain, cool evenings, and changing wilderness conditions.

Essential Clothing

  • Lightweight rain jacket or breathable rain shell
  • Fleece or wool pullover
  • Lightweight long underwear for wearing under waders
  • Short-sleeve and long-sleeve shirts
  • Comfortable pants or quick-dry outdoor clothing
  • Good selection of socks
  • Light gloves
  • Thin wool stocking cap or beanie
  • Baseball cap or sun hat
  • Comfortable tennis shoes or camp shoes

Personal Items

  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Personal medications
  • Toiletry items
  • Camera or smartphone for photos
  • Flashlight or headlamp (especially helpful in late July, August, and September)

Float Plane Travel and Lodge Tips

Our Alaska fishing packages include scenic round-trip float plane flights from Anchorage aboard aircraft operated by Rust’s Flying Service, one of Alaska’s most respected air taxi operators. Packing efficiently helps streamline these wilderness flights and ensures a smoother travel experience.

Please note:

  • Hair dryers and other high-wattage appliances should be left at home, as remote lodge generator systems have limited electrical capacity.
  • CPAP machines can be accommodated 24/7 at the lodge with advance notice.

Anchorage Overnight Recommendation

We strongly recommend planning an overnight stay in Anchorage the evening before your scheduled flight to the lodge. This helps avoid travel delays and allows for a relaxed start to your Alaska fishing vacation.
